Water Treatment Plant Address

Overview

The City of Hillsboro constructed their first water filtration plant in 1926. The Hillsboro Water Department is staffed 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The treatment plant is a surface supply plant which has a capacity of approximately 2.5 million gallons a day. The Water Department can be contacted Monday through Friday at (217) 532-5566.

Staff

The Project Manager is Greg Frieden who has a Class A water operator’s license. The plant is also staffed with 4 other operators:

Water Supply

Water is taken from a combination of two lakes; Lake Glenn Shoals and Old Hillsboro Lake. The water plant also provides for the following areas:

  • Coffeen
  • Graham Correctional Institution
  • The Montgomery County Rural Water District
  • Schram City
  • Taylor Springs

Water Treatment & Storage

Water is treated with:

  • Ammonia to control disinfection byproducts
  • Chlorine for disinfection
  • Coagulants for sedimentation removal
  • Fluoride for healthy teeth

It is then stored in a 500,000 gallon underground storage area to be pumped to customers and to the 1 million gallon storage water tower.

 

City of Hillsboro Lead Service Line Replacement Project

Replacement of Lead Service Lines for Hillsboro, Illinois’ Fiscal Year 2026 Lead Service Line Replacement (LSLR) Program is financed by the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (SRF). The SRF program is administered by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and receives a portion of its money to fund these types of projects from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The LSLR Program includes the replacement of lead and galvanized water service lines for the residents of Hillsboro, Illinois. This program protects water quality and public health, reduces risk of lead exposure through drinking water, and helps the city maintain regulatory compliance.
SRF programs operate in each state to provide communities with the resources necessary to build, maintain, and improve the infrastructure that protects one of our most valuable resources, water.
